Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson & Catherine Popper - Rockwood Music Hall, 10/18/08

Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson, and Catherine Popper played a great sounding set last night at Rockwood, in what seems to be an occasional Norah side project doing a very ear-friendly style of acoustic country-folk. Sounding like a female version of the Little Willies with a nod to the Dixie Chicks, the set was booked as "Dixie Fried" on the Rockwood schedule. Having just seen an excellent set by Heather Christian in the 8pm hour, and hanging later in the second room at Rockwood, the room quieted down for a moment revealing the unmistakable sound of Norah's voice over the sound system. After resolving in the affirmative a quite comical argument in the next room as to whether it was really Norah Jones, I caught the rest of the set and shot a few photos along the way.

Sasha Dobson and Cat Popper (both familiar faces at Rockwood and the Living Room) sound great together with Norah. Sasha played acoustic and sang, Cat handled bass & vocals, and Norah sang and played acoustic guitar, electric guitar and banjo. There's not much yet in the way of information about this project, but it would be great to see these three record together and play more shows. This was a totally unexpected Rockwood treat.

Here is a clip of Dixie Fried's first time performance back on May 12, 2008 at Shayni Rae's Truckstop, which takes over the National Underground (159 E. Houston between Allen & Eldridge, NYC) every Monday night for a hang with some great music (video courtesy of Shayni Rae's Truckstop).

Thank you Amy and Linda for your posts. I did catch some of Black Bunny's set that night and will definitely check them out again. They did an awesome sounding version of the Kinks' "Tired of Waiting".

I'm into blues and jazz songs and Norah Jones is one of my favorite singers. I'm always looking for artists that can compare with Norah Jones' vocals. In fact, some of my past American Idol favorites were kinda bluesy artists.

Wonder if they will play the Kink's song tonight at the Living Room tribute to the Kinks...won't be there, but should be good and lots of great talent there tonight

Thanks Amy for being so dialed in with your posts. Norah closed the first set last night at the Kinks Tribute. With any luck I'll get the photos up soon. Plus maybe the three other Puss & Boots shows I've seen since this one, just love the stuff they are doing.

Why on earth did she cut off her locks? LOL

I think she looks so cute with short hair. So pixie-ish. She looks great any way, any how so far, anyway. Glad that proved true...I couldn't go, but knew that would be a great show if she didn't play with a lineup like that...Cheers.

LOL I think pixie is over rated. :-) Love her music though!!!!!!!
