M&M Minimix #2 - I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know

Picking the all time best love songs is way more involved than it first seemed, mostly because there are so many great songs to choose from (might be a good topic for an XPN 885 survey/countdown). One song that would definitely make my short list of the all time best love songs is "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", written by Al Kooper and released on the very first Blood Sweat & Tears album in 1968. In the past year or so, I've run across three excellent cover versions which I am pleased to stream for your listening pleasure as the Music & More Minimix #2. Enjoy.

M&M Minimix #2 - "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know"

First up in the mix is Marc Broussard's very soulful take from his 2007 release SOS: Save Our Soul,a loving tribute to the great soul songs of the sixties and seventies. As if we needed one more commentary on the sad state of the record business, this record is already out of print; however download and used cds are readily available.

Holly Palmer's voice gets up front and personal with the Fender Rhodes at the beginning of this 2007 version from Songs for Tuesday, her fourth album. The smoldering slow burn ignites into a full band workout a couple of minutes in.

Last December 8th, the Long Island City Bar held a John Lennon tribute night to mark the anniversary of Lennon's death, and Chrissi Poland sang a couple of Lennon tunes including a beautiful take on "Jealous Guy" which she said was inspired by Donny Hathaway's live version of the song. Taking that cue to refresh on Hathaway's short but brilliant recording career, the mix concludes with his superb version of "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" from his classic 1973 album Extension of a Man,his last studio album. Best known for his hit single duets with Roberta Flack, Hathaway was a gifted singer, songwriter and musician, and much like Lennon, left this life way too soon. Listening to his recorded work now, it's clear that he was a man way ahead of his time.

And finally, here is the original version, written and sung by Al Kooper from Blood Sweat & Tears' first album, Child Is Father to the Man(1968). The arrangement and production on this sounds as fresh and powerful now as it did when it was first released over forty years ago.

Blood Sweat & Tears - "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know"

If I ever leave you
You can say I told you so
And if I ever hurt you baby
You know I hurt myself as well

Is that any way for a man to carry on
D'you think he wants his little loved one gone?
I love you Baby, more than you'll ever know
More than you'll ever know

When I wasn't makin' too much money
You know where my paycheck went
You know I brought it home to baby
And I never spent one red cent

Is that any way for a man to carry on
D'you think he wants his little loved one gone?
I love you Baby, more than you'll ever know
More than you'll ever know

I'm not tryin' to be
Any kind of man
I'm tryin' to be somebody
You can love, trust, and understand
I know that I can be, yeah yeah
A part of you that no one else could see
I just gotta hear, to hear you say
It's all right
Yeah, yeah, yeah!

I'm only flesh and blood
But I can be anything that you demand
I could president of General Motors baby, heh
Or just a tiny little grain of sand

Is that any way for a man to carry on
D'you think he wants his little loved one gone?
I love you Baby, more than you'll ever know
More than you'll ever know

If I ever leave you
You can say I told you so
And if I ever hurt you baby
You know I hurt myself as well

Is that any way for a man to carry on
D'you think he wants his little loved one gone?
I love you Baby, more than you'll ever know
More than you'll ever know

I love you, I love you, I love you baby!
Well all right!
I told ya, so many times before
I love you
I love you!
If you don't know, then I'll tell ya one more time
I love you!
I love you!
