Chrissi Poland - Another Lonely Christmas In New York (2011)

Chrissi Poland has just released (today) a new original Christmas song, "Another Lonely Christmas In New York". You can download the song here for just a buck. Before I saw the video, this song was bringing up lots of mental images of Manhattan at Christmas time, which is exactly what Chrissi went out and captured with her video cam. Have a look and a listen.

This has been a good year for Christmas music so far, with new Christmas songs by Keb Mo, The Civil Wars, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, She & Him, and Lyle Lovett. Add Chrissi to that number with this delightful tune. Yes, I said delightful even though it's technically a sad song, and that's because it has a happy feel to it (James Taylor was always the master of making sad songs sound happy). The thing I like best is the part about the wine and the fruitcake and how the backing singers react to the content of the lyrics. Delightful.

There's no chance of Chrissi being lonely this month, not with the slate of great events lined up on her performance schedule. If you're in the New York area, you owe it to yourself to get out to one or more of these shows.

December 10th - The 31st Annual John Lennon Tribute Concert, (Le) Poisson Rouge in NYC. In which Chrissi performs on the same bill with one of her heroes, Bettye Lavette along with a host of others, including Marshall Crenshaw and Steve Forbert.

December 14th
- A Holiday Benefit, CD release show at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. Chrissi donated "Another Lonely Christmas in New York" for inclusion on A Holiday Benefit Volume V, which is a four CD set containing 61 songs for A Holiday Benefit, "a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting inner city students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write."

December 18th - GIG at Highline Ballroom in NYC. "GIG is a collaborative show cycle that brings dance into unconventional venues and shines new light on new music." This is going to be a really big show and the great Martin Rivas will be opening, a show not to miss.

Chrissi Bonus Track: Many years ago, in 2006 to be exact, a good four years before her wonderful debut album/EP Songs From the Concrete, Chrissi released a Christmas single on iTunes where it's still available. Even though this song has little to do with what Chrissi is doing now, it's still a nice slice of pure pop that will surely bring you some holiday cheer. I'll go ahead and admit it, I have the Mariah Christmas album and there's nothing on it any better than "I'll Think of You On Christmas".

After my little foray into the enforced retail worker's Christmas playlist, I've tended to avoid so 'n so's Christmas collection like the black death. I'm getting over it, though, and I have to admit, I love a Christmas song that turns expectation on its head and goes places you don't expect.

"It was Christmas Eve, babe. In the drunk tank"

...and so on. Chrissi's song did that for me. (I really did laugh out loud at the fruitcake line.) Didn't hurt that her voice is exquisite in this song, too.
