Ledisi - CBS Saturday Early Show, 6/28/08



The CBS Saturday Early Show presents live music performances every week during the last half hour of the program. Very quietly presenting some of the best new artists and most interesting established artists, the "Second Cup Cafe" has become the most reliable source for quality live music on network television. Just check out the Second Cup Cafe archive at the CBS website where videos of the performances are all available to watch; most of these are so good we can forgive being subjected to a commercial at the start of each video.



Ledisi's latest, Lost & Found (Verve, 2007)is her major label debut and her third album overall. Garnering much attention for the two Grammy nominations she earned for Lost & Found,Ledisi is also the worthy recipient of much praise for her contributions to tribute albums such as We All Love Ellaand Forever, for Always, for Luther.Live appearances on TV can be a great way to bring new audience to the table, and this morning's performance of "All Right" is a perfect example.



Soul Singer (LeSun, 2001) is Ledisi's debut album, this is the original release.



Soul Singer, the Revival (LeSun, 2003) is remastered & expanded.



Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue (LeSun, 2002) is a jazzy record with both standards and originals. The first two albums go in and out of print frequently but are currently available at Ledisi's website. WXPN Most Memorable Musical Moment #5 Begining in 1964, The Main Point in Bryn Mawr provided the Philadelphia area with one of its most enjoyable venues for live music. Although it started as a folk based coffeehouse, all styles of music were presented over the years. Financial problems continually plagued the Main Point, and in spite of frequent benefit shows by artists who loved the place as much as the audience, the club finally closed in 1981. Cream and Blind Faith at the Spectrum, Philadelphia, 1968 & 1969

WXPN Most Memorable Musical Moment #3 (L-R) Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, & Eric Clapton I could not have foreseen it at the time, but looking back on a concert going history now entering it's fifth decade, my first three concerts were absolutely formative in the development of the music obsession that has driven life as we know it from that point forward. Attending a rock concert pre drivers license was no small feat, that I even got to these shows is the first indication that I knew I was onto something even if I couldn't quite explain it. I've already detailed my first concert (The Beatles at JFK Stadium) in my MMMM#1 . My second and third concerts took place at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, they were less than a year apart, and due to the fact that concerts never end at the time predicted, these concert experiences both ended with a very angry driver stuck waiting in the car outside the venue until the last encore had finished. Pink Floyd at Pompeii MCMLXXII; Impressions Then and Now

Image courtesy of Imax As I was listening to the new release of the soundtrack to the 1972 film by Pink Floyd, Live at Pompeii , the thought occurred to me how much they improved the sound quality. This is knock your socks off stuff. Without going too deep into Floydian fandom, I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that this sounds like the Pink Floyd album that we all have dreamed of. Before we go too crazy, here's what we are dealing with.  The original concert film (and this new soundtrack) thoroughly documents a moment in time; a very fortuitous one at that. The concert at Pompeii took place in the time between Pink Floyd's albums Meddle and Dark Side of the Moon . I've long thought that the song "Echoes" on the Meddle album was a sort of precursor to Dark Side of the Moon . Never mind the latter's sound effect driven commercial success.
