Now We Are Two

Two years ago this month, I started this review site just to see what all the fuss was about with blogging. Now having just finished the complete alphabetical index of every article going back to day one, the only thing more staggering than the amount of material already posted is the backlog I've still got of articles that desperately need to be written, concert photos and movie reviews that need to be posted, new CDs that need to be covered and so forth. And the only thing that often seems to be missing from the equation is the time to do it. But, I'll keep at it, and maybe in another year or two I'll get caught up (or at least make a dent).

What with the internet, MySpace in particular, WXPN, WFUV, KCRW, BBC, satellite radio, and all the venues from Philadelphia to New York and everywhere in between, the opportunities to hear new music have never been more available and more varied and the independent music scene has never been more vital.   Photo courtesy of the artist On the surface, few artists would seem more antithetical to the image of Frank Sinatra than Willie Nelson. We'll skip the revelations about his voice not giving away his age and I'll just point out that he knows his way around a standard; he's written a few in his long, storied career. I'll rely on the Wikipedia to tell you that this is Willie's 71st solo studio album. That means that the number doesn't include groups that he was in, live albums, best of, etc. When you think about it, that number is truly staggering. That's Life is Nelson's second Sinatra tribute, his first being My Way (2018), and he's quite good at it. On  That's Life, we have fairly simple arrangements led primarily by piano, ably played by arranger Matt Rollings, and some exquisite steel guitar by Paul Franklin. Original Cast Recording - Girl From the North Country; Reconsidering Bob Dylan: The Man, The Myth, The Broadway Musical

Todd Almond, cast, 'Girl From The North Country',  Matthew Murphy via Deadline Playbill magazine describes it as a "jukebox musical." That very concept suggests the type of Broadway show that is well liked and potentially quite profitable; shows like Mama Mia (Abba), Movin' Out (Billy Joel) or Beautiful (Carole King).  Girl From The North Country , according to Playbill, had its world premiere at the Old Vic in London followed by a run in the West End before coming to America, where it played at the Public Theater.  Girl From The North Country made its Broadway premiere on March 5, 2020, opening just in time for Broadway's Covid shutdown. The show is scheduled to resume on October 13, 2021 at the Belasco Theater in NYC. Black 47 After Hours (2021), Some Very Special Invited Guests Interpret the Music of Black 47; "Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained"

Photo courtesy of EMI/Black 47 To celebrate the band's 30th anniversary, Black 47 have released a superb tribute featuring seven guest artists who each recorded their choice of Black 47 song. Just one problem, leader Larry Kirwan disbanded Black 47 five years ago after they celebrated their 25th anniversary as a band. They had recorded a final album and gone out on a highly successful farewell tour with the last show broadcast live on the radio.  Fast forward to 2021. Even as a long term listener to Kirwan's Sirius XM radio program Celtic Crush, After Hours came as a bit of a surprise. Kirwan recently played the Screaming Orphans' version of "Sleep Tight in New York City," and while I was tracking that down I made the happy discovery of After Hours .
